Effective Communication Skills

Miscommunication and opposing points of view are part of the workplace and part of life in general.  This course covers the basics of human communication, including the art of listening, persuasive speaking, and an understanding of how relationships develop and are maintained. The course also provides several solutions to the inevitable conflicts that arise at work and home.

Each section offers interactive discussion and relevant, practical information for communication effectiveness in the workplace and at home. This course includes personal assessments taken during the course in order for attendees to better understand their own communication competence and define personal areas for improvement. Each attendee will develop a personal action plan for improving communication.

This course is highly interactive, and includes a workbook, activities and assessments.

Description

This course covers ten principles of communication and relationship building at work:

  • The basics of human communication
  • The lost art of listening
  • Attitude, perception, self-concept and emotions
  • Using positive and effective language that builds relationships
  • Nonverbal communication
  • Intercultural communication
  • Group dynamics and team work
  • Conflict & conflict management
  • Persuasion and negotiation
  • Communication online (e.g., social media, email, etc)

Learning Objectives

At the end of this course, attendees will be able to:

  • Build positive and healthy relationships with co-workers, managers and customers
  • Build collaboration and respect among peers
  • Provide better internal and external customer service through demonstrating active listening skills
  • Define their own perceptions and judgments of others in order to prevent them from getting in the way of effective communication
  • Use language that builds a positive workplace
  • Understand the power of nonverbal communication
  • Overcome misunderstandings and miscommunication with professionalism
  • Eliminate roadblocks that prevent effective communication
  • Rise above emotions during conflict in order to resolve conflict amicably
  • Get their ideas heard through delivery of them in an assertive and persuasive manner
  • Maintain a positive and professional image online and in email communications
  • Define their own communication style and understand what steps must be taken to improve it
