Without the tools or competencies required to execute a strategic plan, no matter how well developed the plan is it won’t be successful. While strategic planning translates strategy to action, strategic thinking seeks to understand what is happening in the present and identify the best response. Strategic thinking serves the organization well by encouraging insights that challenge the status quo represented in a formalized strategic plan.
In other words, it is important to develop a formalized strategic plan, but because change is inevitable it is also important to develop the skills needed to carry out that plan in the midst of unforeseen events.
